The woodland chess set centres on the old hollow oak, known as the Mighty Monarch, which represents the King, and is vital to the well-being of the woodland. It is guarded by the female fox, the vixen, as the Queen, and red squirrel knights, with the wise owls representing the Bishops. The castles, or rooks, are represented by toadstools or boundary pollards trees that traditionally bordered the woodland and were cropped just above the level where they could be grazed by animals. The pawns are little hedgehogs and the game is played, in the same way as any other chess game, on a board of intertwined trees.
